Get Out rating and parents guide: Is Get Out scary?

In a surprise move, Netflix dropped the commercially successful psychological horror flick Get Out on its platform on Oct. 6. If you didn’t get to see it when it first came out in 2017, now is the perfect opportunity to do so. But before you start watching this gripping film on Netflix, we must share with you the age rating and parents guide.

Directed by Jordan Peele in his directorial debut, Get Out follows a young black photographer named Chris who goes on a weekend getaway with his white girlfriend to meet her parents for the first time. But once Chris meets them and the rest of the neighborhood, he immediately senses that something is amiss. He grows increasingly uncomfortable during the visit and starts to suspect that something sinister is going on. What he thought would be a typical awkward first meeting of parents quickly turns into a fight for survival.

Daniel Kaluuya stars in the leading role as Chris Washington while Allison Williams plays the role of Rose, Chris’s girlfriend. Bradley Whitford, Caleb Landry Jones, Stephen Root, Catherine Keener, LaKeith Stanfield, Lil Rel Howery, Keegan-Michael Key, Betty Gabriel, and others also star in the film.

The horror film is rated R, meaning it may be inappropriate for ages under 17. It was given this age rating for graphic violence, bloody images, strong language, and sexual references. This type of content is obviously not meant for young kids to be watching, so we recommend watching this film when they’re not around.

Although it’s labeled as a horror movie, we wouldn’t necessarily say it’s scary. In fact, we’d say it’s more of a psychological thriller than a horror. There are a couple of jump scares, and it’s mildly creepy, but it’s more suspenseful and tense than scary. It might be scary to a younger audience, but to anyone over the age of 17, you’d probably think differently.
